- My perfectly unbiased opinion is that you should absolutely read this book... and tell everyone you know to read it... and give it 5 star reviews.
- I once wrote a column in a twice-weekly newspaper (along with all the other tasks of a rural newspaper editor). It was one of the more fun parts of the job. It is great when readers respond to your thoughts as the more you write the better you know yourself.
In the same way I have had favorite columnists. These writers knew how to tell stories in which normal people and common events became interesting in themselves. The more they wrote, the better you knew them. Perhaps because they indeed better know themselves.
Fortunately, Twyla Righter is such a columnist. ON THE JOB TRAINING collects her work into a single volume.
In the first few items I thought she was trying a little too hard to be funny. (Perhaps they were earlier work?) It did not take long, however, for Righter to find her voice. In most of the pieces the stories flowed naturally and with authenticity, resulting in sighs and nods of recognition, smiles, and some good laughs.
Her topics cover a wide range joys and struggles of holidays, value of family, dieting, our individual strengths and weaknesses, even a few metaphysical musings. She maintains a positive outlook, a wry appreciation for what is good in life, and tolerance for ourselves and others.
I have several favorites from this collection, but one involves the proverbial “following your bliss†which may be more achievable that we might believe
“It’s a short life. We aren’t really here for long. If we pulled our weight… did the part that we could to lighten the load and move things forward, I think we’d know the deep true happiness that life has to offer. Bliss??? That sounds a bit rich – but if we mean a deep, thorough joy from a life with purpose… yeah – I think most of us have found our bliss.â€
Another talks about the joy of little things that make our lives better, such as hugs
“Much like a pill – take this medicine several times per day. And how nice to realize that hugs are also a gift you can give. Just as giving hugs will perk up your health and strengthen your heart - you will be giving those benefits to anyone you hug.â€
Perhaps my favorite, however, is an observation that resonates deeply with me as a parent
“You know I’m cool – and obviously I do- but my kids seem to have some doubts… so a few more stadium hikers will demonstrate the cool factor to my children. As much as they think my bleacher workouts are embarrassing – they have yet to try to talk me into staying home and skipping their performance. No matter how uncool, kids always want us to watch.â€
These short pieces would be enjoyable for browsing or more sustained reading.
